On Sunday, I shared a post exploring what ‘quality’ means in the context of design. Check it out!
This article, which summarizes a recent podcast interview the N/N Group did with Perplexity’s Head of Design, had a few interesting takeaways on the UX of AI. What stood out most to me was the idea of unlocking product simplicity with focus.
When designing products, our goal is to build the most useful thing possible. There are many ways to do this, one of them being adding more functionality to serve additional use cases. In theory, the more features you add to a product, the more value customers should get from using it.
While this is often the right thing to do, it also creates risk in the form of increased complexity because those users have more features that they need to be aware and learn how to use.
On the other hand, products that serve an intentionally niche category or use case mitigate this risk because of their focus on a limited set of tasks. While it’s not always possible to avoid adding features, the potential benefit of new features should always be weighed against the added complexity they may introduce.
